           Girard's business and industry has been on a steady decline ever since Youngstown Sheet and Tube and other area mills began closing in the late 70's and early 80's. Girard is considered a blue collar town with a majority of the population working outside of the city. Because of this, the main industry seen in driving through Girard is that of small businesses and restaurants. 

Employment Levels  

     According to the last two national censuses the employment levels of Girard, Ohio are as follows:

     After viewing the trends above, the employment level slightly increased heading into the new millinium while the number of unemployed decreased. Girard was then making strides to boost the community's economy, but after ten years it seems that many of these strides will likely be negatively affected by the current economic downturn.

Industry and Business Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths:

-Although the number of people 16 years and over has slightly decreased since the 1990 census, the number of people employed in the labor force has increased in this population, according to the 2000 census.

- State Route 422 runs through the heart of Girard and has many small businesses where residents can look for employment.

Weaknesses: 

-Looking at the manufacturing trends from the 1990 to 2000 census's, the number of businesses with 10 or more employees has decreased.

-These same nusinesses that had to downsize their employment also have taken negative hits on annual sales.
